Martyn hints at Leeds changes with summer signing under pressure

November 14, 2020

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Nigel Martyn feels Robin Koch might lose his place when Diego Llorente returns from injury.

Marcelo Bielsa has stuck with Koch ever since the stopper arrived at Elland Road in August. The 24-year-old defender has played every minute of the Whites’ eight Premier League games this season.

Results have been mixed with the Germany star in the side. Three wins, four defeats and a draw sees the Yorkshire side 15th in the table. He has not been faultless in the rearguard, with Martyn pointing the finger at his frailties.

“The goals we have conceded, Koch makes the first error against Leicester,” Martyn told LeedsUnited.News. “Goals are coming down his side, over Cooper. It was [Scott] Dann that got the header on him on Saturday. He is the one making mistakes, but he is the future.”

Having taken seven points from their first four games, things have cooled off for Leeds. Just one point from four outings has seen them descend the standings, with back-to-back 4-1 losses stalling progress.

Bielsa’s men have conceded the joint-most top-flight goals this term with 17 and the Argentinian may take action.

Llorente will soon be an option when he is given the green light to return to action. The 27-year-old has yet to kick a ball for his new club, after injuring a muscle while training with Spain.

It’s reported he could be fit enough to feature against Arsenal when domestic action resumes next Sunday.

Defensive pairing up for grabs

Captain Liam Cooper has been first choice when fit, starting five top-flight games. It remains to be seen what direction Bielsa goes in but Martyn can see a change being made.

“It is a difficult one, Liam is the captain,” he added. “I can see him going with Llorente and Cooper to start with, but that could be something he might have to tinker with.”

But the man who made 273 appearances for Leeds is not writing Koch off completely.

Liam Cooper

“You don’t get long to get an understanding, but he has had long enough to see the current pairing,” he continued. “Once Llorente is fit, you have to see what he is like with Cooper – and then if there is an opportunity, bring Koch back in. Koch’s pace is important.”

Leeds next face the Gunners before a trip to play an Everton side struggling to maintain their early-season form.
