Real Madrid star backs down by accepting fine to avoid potential jail term

November 11, 2020

Real Madrid forward Luka Jovic has accepted a fine of €30,000 to avoid further criminal proceedings after breaking Serbia’s quarantine rules.

The financial penalty, which equates to £26,659, relates to a trip the striker made to his home country in March.

Jovic returned to Serbia during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, but flouted restrictions in the country.

He was spotted partying in the capital, Belgrade, when he should have been isolating for 14 days in accordance with government guidelines.

As such, Serbian authorities handed the fine out soon after he broke the rules. But after Jovic initially refused to pay, the government threatened to open criminal proceedings.

In the face of a potential six-month jail term, Jovic has now paid the €30,000 to settle the matter, according to Cadena Cope (via AS).

The 22-year-old’s actions brought about anger in his home country. Prime minister Ana Brnabic slammed the “negative examples from our football stars, who are getting paid millions and are ignoring mandatory self-isolation upon returning home”.

Jovic was spotted with fellow Serbian and Ascoli midfielder Nikola Ninkovic.

Meanwhile, Aleksandar Vucic, the country’s president, added: “I think they (Jovic and Ninkolic) are both sorry for what they have done, but I would like to make it very clear to them that the lives of our people are much more important than their millions.”

Jovic’s run-in with Serbian authorities comes after his recent struggles for form at Madrid.

The striker joined from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, but only scored two goals in his debut season.

As such, reports linked him with a move away from the Spanish capital. But after he opted to stay in Madrid, he has made five appearances so far this season.
