Pundit tells Man Utd how many signings are needed to win Prem title

November 9, 2020

Louis Saha has told Manchester United they need a number of signings, all of the calibre of Bruno Fernandes, if they are to win the Premier League title again.

United produced their best Premier League performance of the season on Saturday as they ran out 3-1 winners at Everton.

After the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit out at the “joke authorities” who had “set Manchester United up to fail”.

The result lifts United on to 10 points from their seven matches played. They do, however, remain eight points behind current leaders Leicester, albeit with a match in hand.

However, embarrassing home defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham suggest United still have much to work on.

United very much rely heavily on January 2020 signing Fernandes. He was at his brilliant best at Goodison as he took his tally to 18 goals from 33 games for the Red Devils.

Indeed, former striker Saha reckons they need up to four top quality signings if they are to challenge for Premier League glory.

Highlighting the brilliance of Fernandes, Saha insists Solskjaer and Co need more through the door like him.

“The focus is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer,” the Frenchman told Stadium Astro.

“But you also have to look at the recruitment. Some new signings like (£47million midfielder) Fred, you can see the quality but he’s not going to make the difference.

“The signing of Fernandes, you need four of them. You need four of them to actually compete and this is what is missing. You need to know the mentality of new players.

“I want players there who want to win the Champions League and win big trophies. This is what is required here.”

During his time at United, Saha won the Champions League, two league titles and the League Cup.

Morrison, McInally clash over Solskjaer backing

Clinton Morrison and Alan McInally got into a heated disagreement on Soccer Saturday over whether the Manchester United board backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Man Utd

Last Sunday they suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal. And a woeful 2-1 Champions League loss to Istanbul Basaksehir made it two defeats in four days.

They went into Saturday’s game against Everton facing an unwanted record. Another loss would have condemned them to their worst start to a league season since 1989-90.

It didn’t look good when Bernard gave Everton the lead inside 20 minutes. But a quickfire double from Bruno Fernandes sent United into the break in front. And Edinson Cavani clinched a 3-1 victory with his first goal for the club in added time.

United are still in the bottom half but Maguire believes much of the flak is down to United’s past glories.

He said: “At this club one thing I’ve noticed in my time here – I’ve been here a year and a half – is we are the most talked-about club in the world.”
