£10.5m drop in value: Nottingham Forest sold 30-goal attacker at just the right time – opinion

October 24, 2020

Nottingham Forest are always amongst the most active teams in the transfer market and it seems as though every summer they’re signing a new striker.

Lyle Taylor, Lewis Grabban, Hilal Soudani and Rafa Mir have all arrived in recent seasons, but while not all of those signings worked out as planned, one of their high-profile striker departures worked out brilliantly for the Reds.

Indeed, the East Midlands outfit got rid of Britt Assombalonga at the perfect time.

The Congolese forward was undoubtedly Forest’s star man during his time at the club netting 30 goals in 69 games, almost single-handedly keeping them up in the 2016/17 season scoring two vital braces late in the season to steer the club to safety via goal difference.

Assombalonga’s brace on the final day that season would be his final goals for the club as Middlesbrough would sign him that summer for £15m, and it’s fair to say that Forest got the better end of that deal.

The forward’s departure allowed the Reds to build a much more dynamic squad that didn’t just rely on one player, and they’ve gone from being a relegation candidate to a playoff contender since Assombalonga’s departure.

To make things that much better, Assombalonga hasn’t hit the heights that were expected from him at Boro.

He’s yet to hit more than 15 goals in a season for the Teesside outfit and his transfermarkt valuation has now dropped to just £4.5m, £10.5m less than Forest sold him for back in 2017.

Add into that the fact that Forest have a striker who scored more than Assombalonga last season in Lewis Grabban, and it’s fair to say that the Reds don’t miss him at all.

They sold him at the perfect time while his stock was high, and while he’s still a competent Championship forward, it’s hard to envisage him commanding such a figure these days despite only being 27 years old.

Forest can look back on the sale of Assombalonga and be very happy with how that one turned out.
