Man Utd defender Brandon Williams has said he used to be “jealous” of Mason Greenwood when they played at academy level.
Williams and Greenwood are considered to be two of the leading young players at Man Utd at the moment. Each player recently broke into United’s first team and they have made a big impression already.
The left-back first broke into United’s senior squad last season. He went onto make 36 appearances for them in all competitions. His form was rewarded as he signed a new four-year contract in August.
His performances have also been recognised at international level, as he was given his first England U21 call-up in October.
Greenwood is a year younger than Williams, but he first broke into the Red Devils first team in 2018/19.
He only made four appearances for them that season. But he established himself as a regular in the last season. His sharpshooting earned him a lot of praise last year, as he netted 17 times from his 49 outings in all competitions.
Gareth Southgate handed Greenwood his first senior cap for England on 5 September against Iceland. This was a couple of days before the striker and Phil Foden were sent home for breaking COVID-19 guidelines.
In an interview with Man Utd’s official website, Williams admitted that he used to be jealous of Greenwood and James Garner at youth level:
“I wasn’t really happy when I went to The Cliff. This is because I was used to being in school and being the best player, but when I went there I wasn’t one of the best players really! I was down there in the bottom group.
“Mason’s always been there [as one of the best players]. James Garner, he was up there as well. There are a few players who are not here as well now.
“I was jealous at the time because they were skilful and everything. I think that’s why I went further back because I was a striker but now I’m a defender.”
